Ride Synopsis & Highlights: Before Prohibition destroyed the official wine... and beer and liquor... industry in America Missouri was said to have been the second largest wine producing area in the nation, behind only New York. And though the 19th Amendment was repealed in 1933 it wasn't until 1965 that Jim and Berry Held bought an old winery on an stoney hill in the middle of Hermann, Mo. that wine was once again produced in Missouri. Wine making has a long history in the Ozarks – from the Arkansas River in the south to the Missouri River in the north. Those areas evidently had a resemblance to the areas of Germany they left and it was just natural to start making wine. A ride from the Altus, Ark. area up through the heart of the Ozarks to Hermann and Washington, Mo. would be a great tour of the Ozarks wine country. Along the way you can deviate from your course to visit other local wineries. At my last estimate there were well over 50 wineries across the Ozarks. The ride north from Altus to Washington will take you on a winding tour of some of the best roads in the Ozarks... AR 23/the Pig Trail, AR 16, AR 27, AR 14, AR 9 and MO 19. Check out our photo gallery where David Bell, 'Cruise The Ozarks' publisher, has compiled images he has taken along the Pig Trail to provide a preview of what awaits you, as you glide along on this great ride on your motorcycle!
